Pastry Brush Reviews

A few weeks ago, we talked about Pastry Brushes and decided we had to do a review on silicone vs. bristle brushes. Here are our pastry brush reviews.

First of all, I’ll say although bristle brushes soak up more egg or sauce in comparison with the silicone ones, they are harder to clean.

Bristle Pastry Brushes:

  • Soak up more than silicone brushes
  • Apply a more even coat
  • Handles seem to be more user-friendly on a bristle brush.
  • Harder to clean: Can’t seem to get odors out!
  • Bristles break off onto product (nobody wants to find a hair in their food!)

Silicone Pastry Brushes:

  • Easier to clean than bristle brushes: Especially in the dishwasher!
  • Heat resistant: So you can use them for more than just pastries… try brushing butter onto a hot pan.
  • No bristles in food!
  • Aren’t as gentle as a bristle brush
  • Doesn’t quite soak up as much egg or sauce in comparison with bristle brushes.

All in all, I think that I prefer silicon brushes to the bristle ones. They are easier to clean (which is important) and don’t leave bristles in your food.  But not just any silicone brush… Here are two that won my heart:

1. The NorPro Silicone Brush

2. The OXO Silicone Pastry Brush

Tip: When shopping for a silicone brush, choose one that has grooves in the bristles and try to get one that is comfortable in your hand.
